Syscan CM/GM 2D Barcode Technology Awarded "2007 Material Technological Inventions in Information Industry" of Ministry of Information Industry of the People's Republic of China

On the morning of December 26, 2007, the Syscan CM and Syscan GM developed by Wuhan Syscan Technology Co., Ltd were awarded 2007 Material Technological Inventions in Information Industry at the awarding ceremony of Material Technological Inventions in Information Industry at Media Center in Beijing.

2D barcode technology is part of the technology of automatic identification and data capture (AIDC), which achieves data storage through graphic coding and data reading through graphic identification.

Economical and reliable, 2D barcode technology is becoming increasingly popular and being widely recognized in the field of automatic identification and data capture. Currently, in some developed countries, the technology is widely applied to such fields as logistics, banks, national defense, custom, tax, public security, transportation, and civil commodity. This technology is used for driver's licenses, ID cards, annual vehicle inspection, customs declaration, and the assembly of automobiles and electronic products in America and Canada. In China, 2D barcode technology is used widely in such industry as commodity retail, finance, taxation, card, receipt, post, tobacco, textile, hospital, household electrical appliance, agricultural product, and military project.

Greatly supported by Technology Division of Ministry of Information Industry, China Electronic Standardization Institute of Ministry of Information Industry and leaders from Hubei Ministry of Information Industry, the Grid Matrix Code (GM for short, Standard code: SJ/T11349-2006) and Compact Matrix (CM for short, Standard code: SJ/T11350-2006) independently developed by Wuhan Syscan Technology Co., Ltd were officially issued as the standard of Chinese electronic industry in May 2006. The issue of the standard heralded the birth of the first 2D barcode industrial standard with independent intellectual property rights, thus breaking the long-term foreign monopoly on Chinese 2D barcode technology standard.

Patented by many countries including America, Japan, and China, the GM and CM 2D barcodes is really the self-innovation technology breaking the foreign patent monopoly. The grid matrix code (GM) is widely recognized by the experts from AIM Global (Automatic Identification Manufacture Association) with its originality in distributed reading.

AIM Global, a global trade association and an authoritative organization for automatic identification and data capture (AIDC), tested and appraised the technology by using different standards. In the standards used for symbol system necessary to the development of AIM Global standard, consideration is given to its technological value, inter-trade feasibility and some characteristics unavailable to the existing symbol system. Similar with the existing matrix symbol system in structure, it is capable of expressing in Chinese and searching graph and its image is free from marginal damage. Recognized by AIM Global, GM barcode has been taken as the latest development project developed by International Symbol Standard (ISS).

Dan Mullen, director of AIM Global, once said: "internationally speaking, China plays an important part in the development of new barcode."

By far, Syscan has applied for 155 patents across the world. The GM and CM based photoelectric recognition equipment has been widely used in such fields as military project, education, publication, logistics and storage, food, medicine and mobile value added service in China. The industry development program tops the list of the five major special projects in Hubei information industry. The first Hubei-based industry base of 2D barcode in China is under construction. With the sustainable development of the application of self-innovative GM and CM 2D barcode and constant expansion of industrial scale, the 2D barcode based photoelectric products and recognition equipment will meet the market demands at home and abroad. The application of the technology will make great contributions to maintaining basic Chinese information security and promoting the technology development in the information industry.
